Google today rolled out a major update for the iOS and Android apps of Google Maps. A couple of new features have been added to these apps to make the overall user experience much better. Perhaps the most interesting addition is that of Uber. The on-demand private car service will appear as an option when searching for walking or transit directions in some cities.
With Uber integration within Google Maps users will be able to see the estimated time for trips taken with a car summoned using the service. Users will have the option to launch the Uber app directly from within Maps. Its unclear if Google has any plans of blessing Uber’s rivals in this way as well, though the fact it is a Google Ventures portfolio company might have played out favourably.
When using Maps for turn-by-turn navigation users will now receive upcoming lane information, a welcome addition that would help drivers navigate complicated thoroughfares in cities they’re not familiar with.
Users will also be able to store offline maps in advance for future use, the app is capable of recalling saved places when the user is signed in and can also offer indoor and tourist spot Street View imagery for some locations.
Filters have also been added to the Maps application, allowing users to browse through restaurants, bars and hotels by rating, price, opening hours and more from within the app itself. The new Google Maps is now live for both iOS and Android.
