Glow In The Dark Highway Hits The Brakes

Remember our story on the glow-in-the-dark highway that was first conceptualized a couple of years ago before it was realized in the Netherlands? Well, any one of you out there who wished to drive along the Tron-inspired asphalt will have to shelve such dreams at the moment, since the pilot project to test the glimmering streets ran out of steam simply because the illumination bit proved to be not bright enough under many different situations, and even more dangerously, failed at the most crucial of moments when it was needed most.

Still, this particular concept of having your road absorb the energy of the sun during the day to help light up lines that will guide the motorist at night is nothing short of ingenious. Heck, it even picked up the gong for being the Best Future Concept at the Dutch Design Awards, but it does seem as though it is back to the drawing board for this special paint.

Hopefully future iterations of this paint will be able to absorb more than enough levels of ultraviolet light during the day so that it can glow at night without any exception, under all circumstances. You know what they say – if at first you don’t succeed, try again.
