A new variant of the Samsung Galaxy S5 certainly won’t surprise anyone. Over the past few weeks we have been constantly hearing about the Galaxy S5 Active. It will essentially be a much more rugged iteration of this year’s flagship. Samsung released a similar variant for the Galaxy S4 last year so it won’t be nothing new. The SM-G870 model of this smartphone has appeared online in the GFXBench benchmark database giving us a glimpse at the specifications.
The benchmark results show that Galaxy S5 Active may have a 5.1-inch 1080p LCD display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor under the hood. It is understandable why it won’t come with the Snapdragon 801 like the Galaxy S5. Samsung has to make this compromise in order to keep the handset’s price low.
Other purported specifications include 2GB of RAM, 2 megapixel front and a 16 megapixel rear camera, 16GB of onboard storage as well as Android 4.4.2 KitKat. All the rest is pretty much the same as it is on the Galaxy S5. One might question the need for an “Active” variant given that the flagship is both water and dust resistant. Perhaps it may have an even higher level of resistance as well as a much more industrial design, similar to what we saw on the Galaxy S4 Active.
The Galaxy S5 Active has already received a certification from the FCC in the U.S. It is very likely that a launch might take place soon but Samsung hasn’t dropped any hints yet.
