With smartphone OEMs like Samsung, LG, Motorola, and even Apple looking to get into wearable technology, we have to say that we’re surprised to learn that BlackBerry has no such plans. This is according to BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, who launched the BlackBerry Z3 at an event held in Jakarta, Indonesia recently.
According to Chen, “To wearable devices such as smartwatch or smartglasses, we do not have a plan.” Chen did not state the reason why, but he also did seem to rain on the parade of those who are still holding out on the idea that a new BlackBerry tablet could be in the works. He added, “Before you ask again, we are also no plans for production of laptops and tablets. Tablets may be used if it is [of interest], but now is not.”
Chen states that the company is currently focused on consumer devices and the enterprise sector, which is a pretty fair statement. After all BlackBerry used to be the darling when it came to enterprise solutions, so to return to their roots instead of competing in such a saturated market could be a good idea.
There was also mention about a possible new BlackBerry flagship smartphone, and Chen also mentioned that their partnership with Foxconn could soon see the company start rolling out high-end handsets of their own that could be of flagship status and quality. In any case we guess we’ll just have to wait and see what BlackBerry has in store for us, but in the meantime are you disappointed that we won’t be seeing BlackBerry wearables anytime soon?
