When it comes to performing searches on the internet, we have a few options available to us: Google, Yahoo, and Bing, although to be fair, Bing helps to power Yahoo’s searches so in reality as far as major search engines go, there aren’t that many to choose from. That being said, Bing hasn’t exactly been the most popular either, which has led to some wondering if Microsoft would be better off selling it to someone else.
The good news for Windows users and Bing fans is that no, Microsoft will not be selling off Bing, especially not to Yahoo. This was confirmed by Microsoft’s new CEO, Satya Nadella, who spoke during the Code Conference in San Francisco yesterday. According to Nadella, he believes that with the help of Bing, Microsoft has made breakthroughs in the way computers understand questions posed in a more natural, human way.
Nadella was quoted as saying, “I say it’s very important technology. We are very happy to partner with Yahoo, and not selling it.” This follows earlier comments he made about the Xbox as well, where he stated that the Xbox will be here to stay and that they had no plans of selling the brand or spinning it off into a separate company.
As it stands, Microsoft’s Bing commands about 18% of the search market by itself, although with their partnership with Yahoo, that number jumps to around 30%. Interestingly enough those were roughly the same numbers back in 2009, although back then Yahoo’s market share was at 20%, with Bing at a measly 8%, but what do you guys think? Is Microsoft right in keeping Bing around?
