But will 8GB of RAM be enough for console games? Well developer Crytek doesn’t seem to think so, and has recently expressed their belief that next-gen games will eventually require that much resources where they will be able to hit that 8GB ceiling in a matter of time. This sentiment was expressed by Crytek’s US engine business development manager, Sean Tracy, in an interview with GamingBolt.
According to Tracy, “8GBs can easily be filled up, but also keep in mind that developers don’t necessarily even have access to all of it. For example the Xbox One retains some of the RAM for OS purposes. Since technology progresses exponentially, we will soon find that the computational requirements of games will quickly hit the ceiling of a few gigs of ram.”
However this does not mean that Crytek isn’t pleased by the next-gen consoles. In fact the developer seems to be pretty happy with what Microsoft and Sony has done, but if there was added power and resources, it would be better. Tracy also goes on to state that this means that future CryEngine games released on either console will be capped at 30fps, meaning that if you were hoping for games running at 60fps, you’d be out of luck.
