The USPTO has since classified the trademark as “abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.” The trademark expired back in October of 2013. Then again we guess we can’t say that this comes as a complete surprise. After all DotA 2 has only be officially released for about a year, so we guess it’s too early to consider a sequel.
That and the fact that DotA 2 is such a highly competitive game, much like Blizzard’s StarCraft franchise, that by creating a sequel so soon could disrupt that. After all the original StarCraft and the Warcraft 3 DotA mod is still being played competitively even today. That being said we can only imagine that one day Valve could consider a DotA 2 sequel, but for now it looks like their attention will be focused on the current game, but what do you guys think? How long more do you think DotA 2 will be around before we can expect a sequel?
