For those unfamiliar with the Nest Protect, it’s basically a smoke and carbon monoxide detector that will go off by high levels of smoke or carbon monoxide are detected. One of its features is the “Nest Wave” that basically allows the user to turn off the alarm with a wave of the hand, but apparently it can also be unintentionally deactivated which could pose some safety issues.
According to a post on the Nest website by the company’s co-founder, Tony Fadell, “During recent laboratory testing of the Nest Protect smoke alarm, we observed a unique combination of circumstances that caused us to question whether the Nest Wave (a feature that enables you to turn off your alarm with a wave of the hand) could be unintentionally activated.”
Thankfully no one has been hurt yet and no issues have arisen especially since the problem was detected by the folks at Nest themselves. To address this issue for now, Nest has temporarily disabled the Nest Wave function and have put a halt to sales of the Protect device until a solution can be figured out.
For those whose Nest Protect unit is not connected to the internet, Fadell urges them to connect it to the internet where they will be able to receive the update that disables Nest Wave. No word on how long it will take for them to come up with a solution, but Fadell has estimated it will take anywhere between 2-3 months as they will require approval from safety agencies in the US, Canada, and the UK.
