HTC One M8’s Dual-Lens Setup Draws Interest From Huawei And Lenovo [Rumor]

htc-one-review-m8-labshot-11It wasn’t too long ago that HTC officially released the HTC One M8 and one of the device’s more unique selling points, apart from its aluminum build and BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers, is the fact that it comes with an Ultrapixel sensor and a dual-lens setup. For those unfamiliar, this setup allows users to edit the focus of their photos even after snapping them, much like the Lytro camera.

However while the feature is pretty novel and interesting, our review found that the camera’s images weren’t exactly up to scratch when blown up. Perhaps on a smaller screen and for web use it’s great, but if you wanted to print them or perhaps use it as a wallpaper, that’s when some of the flaws of the camera can be seen.

Interestingly enough it seems that the dual-lens option is starting to catch on, at least according to DigiTimes who is reporting that other Android OEMs are starting to look at a dual-lens setup as well. According to their report, they have named companies such as Huawei and Lenovo as some of the companies that could incorporate dual-lenses in their smartphones next year.

They have also named other “international smartphone vendors” but were also quick to point out that Samsung and Apple are not on that list. In the past we have heard the rumors that Nokia themselves could be interested in a Lytro-like setup, but other than that we’re not sure which other international smartphone vendors DigiTimes is referring to. In any case what do you guys think? Is the dual-lens setup an important feature for smartphone cameras, or do you think it’s more of a novelty?
