The first Apple VS Samsung trial received a lot of publicity. It revolved around patent infringement and the jury did find that Samsung had infringed on several Apple patents. The Korean juggernaut was ordered to pay nearly $1 billion in damages to Apple. Both companies will now face each other once again in the same San Jose courtroom where the first trial took place. This trial revolves around a newer generation of products and different patents.
Yesterday 10 jurors were selected to hear the case both companies, it comprises of four men and six women, some of whom have ties to the tech industry. Its a diverse jury which includes a retired plumber, a Los Gatos police department community service officer and a retired software executive who used to work at IBM.
Apple now seeks as much as $40 per Samsung device that is found to have infringed on its patents. This claim may top $2 billion and Samsung may have another lengthy legal battle on its hands if jurors see eye to eye with Cupertino. Samsung comes armed to the trial with a countersuit though it only seeks a few million dollars. Today both sides are scheduled to make their opening arguments, even though the trial officially started yesterday with the selection of the jury.
