Xiaomi Redmi 2 Spotted In China’s TENAA Database

Xiaomi might not be a brand that everyone is familiar with, although chances are if you live in Asian countries like China, Hong Kong, or Singapore, you might have heard of the device. This is particularly thanks to the Xiaomi Redmi handset which was a budget handset with pretty impressive hardware specs, leading to the handset selling out in a couple of minutes.

Now it looks like Xiaomi is hoping to repeat that success with the successor in the form of the Xiaomi Redmi 2, a handset which we have heard about in the past. The device was recently sighted at China’s TENAA certification database (basically China’s equivalent of the FCC) where some of its specs were revealed.

According to the listing, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 (identifiable via its red buttons below) will pack a 5.5-inch 720p HD display, an octa-core chipset courtesy of MediaTek clocked at 1.4GHz. It also appears that there will be a 1.7GHz model available which presumably would be priced a little higher.

The handset will be accompanied by 1GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, and a microSD card slot for memory expansion of up to 32GB. In fact these specs do sound like the ones we have heard about earlier, although Xiaomi has yet to make an offical announcement.

These are pretty decent specs and sounds like the making of a mid-high end device, but given that the previous Redmi handset was priced at $130, we expect Xiaomi to maintain its budget offering with the Redmi 2 as well. The company is also expected to unveil the handset at its MiFan Festival, a celebration event for the company’s anniversary which will be held in April.
