Twitter #Music Bites The Dust

Twitter #Music has been around for over a year. It never really took off after its launch, which came as a result of We Are Hunted’s acquisition by Twitter back in 2012. The team behind We Are Hunted built Twitter #Music as a service that provide users with an entirely new method for music discovery, based on what music and artists were generating the most buzz on Twitter. Active development on the iOS app has been halted for months, and today it was officially announced that Twitter #Music will no longer be available on the App Store.

Existing users who already have the app installed on their iOS devices won’t be able to use it after April 18th. This goes to show that Twitter has realized that its finally time to pull the cord, and that there’s no reason to let #Music keep on dragging its heels. Twitter does say that it will continue to look for “new ways” to keep music in the mix.

The app just couldn’t pull users from competing music discovery applications, of which there are many. Prior to its launch, access to Twitter #Music was provided to a handful of well known artists just to generate buzz, but that too failed to help. So long, #Music, it was nice knowing you.
