Phil Spencer Takes Over Microsoft’s Xbox Division

Xbox E3 2013 Media Briefing

Earlier this month it was announced that head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, Marc Whitten, was leaving the company and joining Sonos. Since then one of the most powerful divisions over in Redmond has been without a leader, not anymore. Today CEO Satya Nadella announced that Phil Spencer, who previously served as VP of Microsoft Studios, is now the new Xbox lead. He has worked in the Xbox division in a variety of roles for a long time.

Spencer will now be looking after a lot more. The Xbox, Xbox Live, and creative teams including Xbox Music, Xbox Video and Microsoft Studios will now be under his belt. Spencer promises that we’ll hear “much more” from the division as E3 approaches, and we’ll quite obviously be seeing and hearing a lot from him in the future.

Nadella says that Spencer’s new role will ensure that the company continues to do “great work” across the Xbox business, and “bring more of the magic of Xbox to all form factors, including tablets, PCs and phones.” Phil Spencer is one of the top executives at Microsoft who led the charge with Xbox One. He, along with Phil Harrison, looked after the games side of Xbox One launch. Spencer says that he is “honored” to lead the team at this time for Microsoft and the games industry.
