Not content with letting Sony steal the show with the announcement of Project Morpheus, Sony’s own take on virtual reality gaming, the folks at Oculus have announced that the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 is up for pre-order where those interested will be able to get their hands on the device for $350 and where it is expected to begin shipping in July.
The Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 is an upgrade over the original Oculus Rift from 2013. Instead the upgraded model will feature components from the Crystal Cove kit prototype that made its debut at CES 2014.
In fact if motion sickness was one of your main concerns, the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 should resolve that. This is thanks to the low persistence OLED display that will help reduce motion blur and judder, factors which apparently contribute to motion sickness experienced by some gamers and developers who have tried the original Oculus Rift.
The company has also bumped the resolution to 1080×960 per eye with a 100-degree field of vision, along with a built-in latency tester that will provide real-time measurements help users optimize the virtual reality experience.
The new development kit will also have out-of-the-box engine integration for Unity 4, Unreal Engine 4, and the Unreal Development Kit as well. The external control box has also been done away with and now developers will be able to connect the new Oculus Rift kit directly to the PC via USB and HDMI.
