The emerging trend this year seems to be 2K smartphones, basically phones that have 2,560×1,440 pixel resolution displays. Chinese vendor Vivo was the first one out the door with a 2K smartphone, called the Xplay 3S. Rival Oppo is going to launch its very own 2K offering in the very near future. From the mainstream vendors, it was expected that Galaxy S5 would have a 2K display, but it doesn’t, though it is still rumored that a premium variant of the Galaxy S5 could come touting this display. The jury is still out on that, but the latest reports coming in from China suggest that Huawei too is gearing up to jump on this bandwagon.

This new 2K smartphone from Huawei will reportedly belong to its Ascend D series, the high-end line. Apart from a 5 inch 2K display offering 587 pixels per inch, the new Huawei Ascend D smartphone is expected to have a 2 GHz octacore HiSilicon K3V3 processor. Reports claim that the phone will be initially released in China this September from a little north of $600.

It is unclear right now if this phone will make it outside China. Huawei’s ambitions of competing in the global smartphone market with the big boys is no secret, but it still has a long way to go before it becomes a household name in this part of the world.
