It also comes with a security feature which on the surface sounds like a good idea, but it could potentially backfire upon the user as well. According to a new discovery of the phone’s features, it seems that the HTC One M8 will come with a built-in security feature that will give the user only 10 tries to unlock a device before all of its contents are wiped.
Good idea, right? On the surface it seems that way since a wiped phone is basically a useless phone to the person stealing it, assuming its the contents of the phone that they want in the first place. However this could prove problematic in the event that children are messing with your phone and accidentally wipe it for getting the password or pattern wrong too many times.
It could also be a good way for someone to wipe your phone on purpose, whether it be a very mean prank or for someone who wants to get you in trouble. This would not be such a big deal if HTC included the option to disable it, which they haven’t. One way to go about this is to store all your important files onto a microSD card or cloud storage, so in the event the phone is wiped, at least your photos, videos, downloads, and contacts are still safe.
To HTC’s credit, they do make it difficult to hit that 10 attempt mark. After 5 unsuccessful attempts, the phone will be locked for the next 30 seconds, and after that popup messages will appear for each unsuccessful you make leading up to the 10th try. In any case this is something worth taking note of, but what do you guys think? Should HTC include an option to disable it?
