The Galaxy S3 was one of Samsung’s best performing smartphones. Even now there is a sizeable majority of users that has chosen not to upgrade from this outdated flagship. No matter how popular it may be, that doesn’t mean it would be on the top of the OEMs list for major software updates. A recent rumor suggested that the Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 Android 4.4 update is out of the question since it only has 1GB of RAM. However an alleged leaked memo from Samsung India once again hints at the possibility of Android 4.4 for Galaxy S3 GT-I9300.
Inadequate RAM argument made sense to some extent. The presumption was that it won’t be enough to truly support Samsung’s updated TouchWiz user interface, which happens to be quite the resource hog. However Android 4.4 was built to ensure that it run on devices that have RAM as low as 512MB. This means that Galaxy S3 falls well within the minimums.
The alleged memo lists update schedule for several Samsung devices. These include Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note, both received Android 4.4 updates last month. Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Grand 2 are expected to receive the update between April and May 2014. Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 is mentioned as well with an expected release date also falling between April and May.
Its not impossible for such a decision to change. We have seen this happen in the past as well. If the update really does come out, it would definitely mean that Samsung has listened to its customers and delivered.
