Soon after the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch was released last year, reports of its dismal performance in the market started circulating. This lead many to believe that the company might launch its smartwatch’s successor earlier than intended. Alongside the Galaxy S5 last month Samsung did launch its new smartwatches, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. Ahead of their release later this month, the original Samsung smartwatch has received a major price cut in Canada.
Bell Canada is now selling the Galaxy Gear for just $100. This translates into a $250 discount on the smartwatch’s $250 launch price. Bell Canada is offering the smartwatch in ivory, orange and black colors. It looks like Bell is trying to get rid of any inventory it has left before the next generation smartwatches are released. Customers who buy the Galaxy Gear will need to have a compatible device, only a handful of Samsung smartphones and tablets are compatible with it.
Samsung has addressed quite a few pain points in the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. The biggest change is that these smartwatches no longer run forked versions of Android. They’re powered by Tizen. Samsung has also opened up their SDK to developers, so users will have a much greater choice of apps this time around.
