Dubbed iDROID, Siliconera reports that the app will basically function the same way as Snake’s in-game handset. However the drawback to Snake’s in-game handset is that it is full screen, meaning that it leaves you vulnerable while you check on it. Using the iDROID app on the other hand will leave your screen free while you check on your phone.
The app will allow gamers to check maps, find targets, call in helicopters, and there is even a Heat Map overlay which shows where other players might have died, so you know that the area might be a particularly difficult or tricky one if it shows that many players have died in a certain spot.
When not used for gaming, the app can also be used to listen to music as well as listen to “cassette tapes” which basically provides gamers and fans some background story. There will also be a game in the app that allows gamers to expand Snake’s “Mother Base”, a feature similar to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
The app will be released for smartphones come 20th of March in Japan, while the Xbox 360 will be getting a different app for its SmartGlass version. We’re not sure if the app will see a release outside of Japan since there might be some localization required, but we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it.
