Speaking during a Q&A session, the CEO of BlackBerry, John Chen, revealed that the company might be thinking about moving beyond handsets and the phone for its BBM service. This was in response to a question regarding Facebook and WhatsApp’s deal which saw the former acquire the latter for a whopping $19 billion. While we’re not sure what this means – could it mean as a means to facilitate payments? Well some have speculated that it could mean a move to the desktop.
In all fairness this would not be the first time we heard of such a move. In the past we’ve seen BBM demoed on a desktop, and just last month a survey went out in which BlackBerry appeared to be gauging interest for a desktop version of BBM.
If it does arrive for desktop, it would be joining the ranks of Skype, iMessage and LINE, all of which have a desktop and mobile version where users can communicate with each other either on their computers or on their mobile phones. We’re not sure if BlackBerry would ever make a desktop client, but what do you guys think?
Would you be open to that idea?
