According to a statement Amazon released to the folks at TechCrunch, “Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers.” This is actually not the first time that Amazon has shown interest in gaming. Back in 2012, the company founded Amazon Game Studios where they launched titles such as Living Classics, a Facebook game, and Air Patriots, a game designed for mobile devices.
It is unclear what Amazon’s plans for Double Helix Games are, but the good news is that it does not appear that anyone will be getting laid off as all 75 Double Helix Games employees will be staying on through the transition. Perhaps Amazon might leverage Double Helix Games’ experience to help with their console, or perhaps Amazon might just start releasing titles of their own again, either way we can’t wait to see what the company has planned.
