Rumor has it that Microsoft is working on a new Windows 8.1 update that is expected to be released in the next couple of months. Apparently called “Update 1,” it is claimed to be a minor update which will primarily focus on improving shared code use between Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, thus allowing developers to easily build apps that are compatible with both platforms. Screenshots of this unreleased Windows 8.1 Update 1 have leaked online today.
We can’t notice any major user interface changes in these leaked screenshots, and rather unfortunately, nor can we notice the return of the Start Menu. There was a lot of debate about bringing the classic Start Menu back and while Microsoft has confirmed that a future update will ultimately bring it, Update 1 doesn’t seem to be the one. According to reports, this particular update is going to be finalized in March, prior to its release in April, which could coincide with the company’s BUILD conference. At the conference, Microsoft is expected to go into detail about this latest Windows 8.1 update as well as Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft might just be testing the waters with Windows 8.1 as it looks towards releasing the “Threshold” updates early next year, those updates are expected to bring major changes, and quite possibly even the much awaited Start Menu.
