It goes without saying that people with carrier locked smartphones have to wait longer to receive the latest software updates. HTC One owners in the U.S. have been anxiously waiting for Android 4.4 KitKat to drop. Released late last year, the update brings a few visual enhancements as well as improvements under the hood. HTC U.S. has finally confirmed that the update has now entered carrier testing, and if all goes according to plan, the roll out may begin in the very near future.

HTC U.S. tweeted that it expects carrier certification of the update next week. Once that happens, it is only a matter of time before the update starts being rolled out over the air. HTC One owners will then receive notifications on their devices informing them that the update is available for download. Since the roll out is conducted over-the-air, the update is downloaded on the device itself and then automatically installed. Usually final carrier testing doesn’t reveal any major issues that could end up taking a lot of time to fix, so now its all about waiting until the certification process is over. The update isn’t typically rolled out for all carriers at once, and the roll out is often staged, meaning that some users might receive it a bit earlier in the day than others.
