It doesn’t surprise anyone any more that there’s a huge appetite in the market right now for smartphones with large displays, as large as 6 inches. These products are often referred to as phablets, since they’re not exactly conventional 7 inch tablets. Samsung has released quite a few phablets over the past few years, the most popular being its Galaxy Note lineup. The company has plans to release even more in 2014, so says Samsung’s executive director Hyunjoon Kim.
During the fiscal quarterly results conference call, Kim revealed that Samsung plans to release more 5 to 6 inch devices this year. Existing devices in this category include 5.8 inch and 6.3 inch Galaxy Mega as well as the Galaxy Grand. These products have exactly proved to be a hit in the market, so under the company’s new strategy, multiple devices with large displays will be added to the lineup. Kim said that these new phablets will be differentiated based on their displays, but didn’t clarify if its the size or the quality which will be the distinguishing factor. Moreover, Samsung will also work on improving features such as S Pen functionality and Multi-Window, which lets users open multiple apps side by side. These features have already provided Samsung’s phablets a leg up on the competition, enhancing them will only serve the company’s own interests.
