Based on the rumors, Samsung’s first Tizen smartphones are expected to debut this February, and according to a new report from a Japanese magazine, Mainichi, Japanese carrier NTT DOCOMO has reportedly confirmed that Samsung’s Tizen devices will be available in March, presumably following their announcement in February.
Samsung has been working on Tizen for a while now and that is no secret, but apparently the company has been delaying the release of Tizen devices for a variety of reasons. Given that MWC 2014 is taking place in February, it does make sense that Samsung will probably have something to announce then. As it stands there are many smartphone platforms in the market at the moment. We have iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Mozilla’s Firefox OS, and Sailfish, just to name a few, so we have to wonder if having another platform is really what we need at the moment?
It is possible the smartphone market could end up like the computer market where there is one dominant OS, Windows, followed by a handful of smaller operating systems that have their own loyal following, like OS X, Linux, and Unix. It will also be interesting to see how well Samsung’s Tizen devices are received, as we have to wonder if Samsung’s success in the smartphone market has to do with its hardware, or its software, which at the moment is Android.
