Update – We have managed to get our hands-on the LG G Pro 2 at MWC, so be sure to check it out if you’d like to learn more about the device!
A couple of years ago, we guess you could say that Samsung pioneered the phablet category when it announced the first Samsung Galaxy Note. The device featured a 5.3-inch display, which at that time was considered to be pretty massive. However fast forward to today, many companies have no qualms about releasing phones with large displays.
In fact we have seen how companies like Sony and Hisense push the boundaries with phone whose displays are larger than that of 6-inches. That being said, it looks like at MWC 2014, we can look forward to additional phablets, and one of them could be from LG, Samsung’s biggest rival back home, who recently confirmed that there will be an LG G Pro 2 that will most likely be unveiled at MWC 2014.
Assuming that LG keeps to the same display panel type they used last year, chances are we could be looking at an IPS display.
We have heard that LG could be working on their own chipset which has been given the codename “Odin”. The rumos claim that it will be an octa-core chipset, although whether it will be a “true” octa-core chipset like MediaTek’s own creation remains to be seen, or whether it might take a cue from Samsung’s Exynos 5 octa-core chipset that utilizes the big.LITTLE design. The rumors also claim that LG could use their Odin processors in their devices for 2014.
There is also the possibility that the LG G Pro 2 could pack 3GB of RAM, but apart from that not much else is known. We’re not even sure what camera the LG G Pro 2 could pack, but with the G Pro featuring a 13MP camera, we can only assume LG will at least keep the same camera, or potentially upgrade it to a 16MP one.
It has been rumored that the LG G Pro 2 could sport a variety of connectivity features, such as NFC and LTE-A, with the latter expected to be made available in South Korea in 2014 where users will be able to enjoy connection speeds of 300Mbps.
The pricing of the LG G Pro 2 remains unknown for now, but presumably LG will keep it around the same price as the original G Pro. As for availability, LG did state that the handset would be announced in February, presumably at MWC 2014, so perhaps we will learn more about its availability then.
