iPod Sales Are On The Decline

Back in the day, Apple’s iPod was one of the company’s best selling products. In a way it was even a fashion statement thanks to the white earphones that easily identified the wearer as an iPod owner, to the extent where other companies started to issue white earphones with their products as well. However fast forward to today, the iPod is hardly garnering the same amount of attention or excitement as it once did. After all our phones and tablets are just as capable of playing songs and performing more functions, so why would we need an additional device just for that, right? To that extent even Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, acknowledged that the iPod is a declining business.

Speaking at Apple’s quarterly earnings call, Cook was quoted as saying, “The way we look at it, our business is a sell-through point of view less iPod — all of us have known for some time that iPod is a declining business.” In fact the graph above shows that sales of the iPod have been on the decline. Apple has yet to announce any changes to their iPod lineup, apart from introducing a new color option for the iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle. In fact the iPod classic, the iPod with the largest storage, has not been updated in over four years. We’re not sure what this means for the future of the iPod product line, but what do you guys think? Will Apple eventually discontinue it or will they just maintain it with slight improvements here and there over the next few years?
