iPhone 6 Camera Will Reportedly Have Optical Image Stabilization

Apple has never taken part in the megapixel race with its rivals. Its latest flagship, the iPhone 5S, proudly boasts an 8 megapixel camera while most of its Android rivals have 13 megapixel cameras. The company chose to focus on radically improving image processing and opted to work on better lenses and sensors. Despite that, there’s one thing that’s missing, something that greatly enhances overall performance: Optical Image Stabilization or OIS. Rumor has it that Apple is now working on this technology and plans to introduce it in its next flagship, the iPhone 6.

A patent application called VCM OIS actuator module has been recently discovered which reveals just how improved autofocus and OIS will be incorporated in an iPhone’s camera. The method describes employing voice coil motor actuators to give the camera lens some wiggle room around the optical axis, this would result in better autofocus as well as Optical Image Stabilization. The patent reveals that Apple has been working on this technology since at least 2012, but its not immediately clear right now how far they have come along. We have already started hearing rumors about the iPhone 6, and this patent makes it seem like it will tout OIS. Its a bit too soon to be absolutely sure right now, we’ll have to wait and see if there’s any more chatter about the camera on Apple’s next generation iPhone.
