Harman Introduces Next-Gen Scalable In-Vehicle Infotainment System
[CES 2014] When it comes to in-vehicle entertainment systems, companies such as Apple and Google are reportedly showing interest, and as it stands there does not appear to be a standard as to what an in-vehicle entertainment system should be like, meaning that your entertainment system will differ depending on which car company you go with. Well if you’re a fan of Harman’s audio and infotainment systems, you might be interested to learn that the company has recently announced their next-gen scalable in-vehicle infotainment platform which not only comes with the usual features one might expect from such a system, but will boast system security to help protect you agains cyber threats.
Harman’s system will be powered by Linux as the underlying operating system, and will turn to HTML5 for its apps, allowing developers familiar with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to create apps for their ecosystem which will also feature an app store of Harman’s own making. According to Sachin Lawande, President, HARMAN Infotainment Divison, “We’re excited to start this transformation with our next-generation scalable infotainment platform. This new platform offers users the customizability and upgradability they know from other devices.” Harman is also hoping to integrate both infotainment systems and driver assistance systems together, instead of relying on separate devices and will provide the usual lane departure warning and collision warning systems, amongst other features.
