Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post, Valve’s Gabe Newell revealed why the company does not take the easy route out and just produce sequel after sequel. “When we started out we were a single-player video game company that could have been really successful just doing Half-Life sequel after Half-Life sequel, but we collectively said let’s try to make multiplayer games even though there’s never been a commercial successful multiplayer game.” Of course there is nothing wrong with churning out sequel after sequel. In fact companies such as Ubisoft have no qualms about releasing Assassin’s Creed titles on a yearly basis because that’s how confident they are of the franchise.
What do you guys think? Do you think that constant releases will devalue a franchise, or are you, like most gamers, starting to get impatient that Valve has yet to make any Half-Life 3 announcements?
