That particular firmware update seemed to have altered the way that battery life was measured for a certain battery pack – namely, the EN-EL14a. This might sound surprising if it is the first time that you have heard of it happening, but apparently, this is not the first time that such a thing has happened. Of course, this will also lead some to figure out that it might be far better to invest in an original battery than a third party model right from the get go, even though that would mean forking out more money at the beginning.
