Fairphone To Start Shipping Later This Month

Earlier this year we reported on a particularly interesting Android handset by the name of Fairphone. What made the device unique wasn’t so much its specs, its camera, its software, or its design, but rather the fact that the phone was made using as little conflict materials as possible. The good news is that if you were one of the few thousand who pre-ordered the handset at the time of its announcement, you will be pleased to learn that the handset will be leaving its factory on the 23^rd of December. Granted this is a pretty long time to wait, but apparently there were production problems, but we suppose better late than never, right?

The company had originally intended to ship 25,000 phones but due to multiple issues, such as certification, supplier mixup, and customs, they were unable to meet that goal. In terms of hardware, customers can look forward to a 4.3” display with a resolution of 960×540. It will feature an 8MP rear-facing camera and will be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor from MediaTek. It will be accompanied by 1GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage, all of which will cost around $440 before taxes.

While it’s not the most powerful Android phone we’ve seen, it’s unique because the company has sourced for conflict-free tin and tantalum from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and are working to ensure components such as tungsten and gold that are used in its devices are conflict-free too.
