It has been over a week since Beyonce dropped an album out of the blue, sending her fans into a frenzy. She was reportedly supposed to launch the album in 2014, no one was expecting it around the time when it was released. The album, titled Beyonce, was launched exclusively on iTunes and that seems to have ruffled a few feathers. Target has already announced that it is not going to stock physical copies of the album and Amazon too has followed suit. Target said that a digital release prior to its physical availability impacts demand and sales, which is why the retailer has decided not to stock the new Beyonce album. Seems like they’re not pleased at all about how this album was launched.
Despite that, Beyonce’s new album has become the fastest selling iTunes album, selling over a million copies in the first week alone and certifying as a platinum record in the U.S. Target’s rival Walmart received some preferential treatment as well, because after the former’s snub, Beyonce personally went down to a Walmart and handed out $50 gift cards to more than 750 customers. Even if Amazon won’t be stocking physical copies, it still sells the MP3 version for $16 through its online US MP3 store.
