Windows Phone has consistently been bringing in good numbers, we recently reported that the OS now holds over 4 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, a major increase as compared to the same time last year. Latest data from IDC reveals that Windows Phone has been performing well in the global smartphone market as well. Data shows that 9.5 million WP smartphones were shipped in three months ending September 2013, which translates into an overall 3.6 percent share in the global smartphone market in Q3, 2013. Compare these numbers with Q3, 2012, and you get a nearly 156 percent boost.
iOS and Android enjoy their positions at the very top, with the latter holding a staggering 81 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter. According to the data, iOS market share declined in the third quarter, coming down from 14.4 percent in Q3, 2012 to 12.9 percent. During this period, BlackBerry’s market share declined 41.6 percent with merely 4.5 million units being shipped. Windows Phone has certainly received a push from Nokia’s Lumia lineup, particularly its Lumia 520 smartphone, which has performed quite well in the market, specially in emerging markets. These numbers might improve in the coming quarter if the handful of new Lumia devices that Nokia announced recently end up doing well too.
