When the term wearable technology is mentioned, chances are you might think of smartwatches or eye-wear, like Google Glass, but we never thought it would take on such a literal manifestation in the form of the Motiif M trench coat, which as you can see pictured above, looks like a regular trench coat on the surface, but actually sports a WiFi hotspot and a smartphone charger up it sleeves (not literally!). How it works is that the M will make use of Karma’s pay-as-you-go network for data connectivity, which essentially piggybacks off Sprint’s network. M owners will be eligible for free 1GB of data every month for the first three months, after which they can continue to subscribe at $14 a month.
As for the charging portion of the coat is concerned, it will reside in the chest region and will be a charger that will play nicely with a variety of devices, including Apple’s range of iPhones, and wireless charging is expected to be added as well, although this will require a special case for phones that do not currently support the feature. At the end of the day instead of plugging your coat into an electric outlet, which would seem weird, all you’d have to do is hang it up on its hanger which also sports wireless charging as well. Pretty cool, huh?
For those interested in the Motiif M trench coat, it is expected to see a launch in February 2014, although no word on how much it will cost just yet. More information as well as the application to be an alpha tester can be found on Motiif’s website.
