Sony’s $399 PS4 Costs $381 To Build [Report]

When Sony announced the price of its PlayStation 4, there was much rejoicing in the gaming world as it was just $100 less than Microsoft’s next-generation console, the Xbox One. Those who are on the fence to buy a PlayStation 4 as you are waiting for the console’s first price drop, don’t hold your breath as the cost of building the console is just too close to its retail price.

The PlayStation 4 reportedly costs a total of $381 to build, which is only $18 under its current retail price. This number is according to research firm IHS’ findings, which took a look at both the PlayStation 4 console as well as its DualShock 4 controller. IHS will reveal the cost of each component specifically in the near future, but a total of $381 to build what comes in a PlayStation 4 retail box shows Sony is making very little profit pricing it at $399.

“If Sony could build the PS4 for a lower cost it would do so, but if history is any indicator, it would also lower its retail price,” says IHS analyst Andrew Rassweiler.

Considering the PlayStation 3 sold at a loss when it first was released back in 2006, actually releasing a console for some kind of profit is certainly a step in the right direction for Sony.
