More Developers Planning On Developing For Windows Phone In 2014

When it comes to app availability or variety, safe to say that iOS and Android are taking the top two spots, with both platforms numbering apps close to a million by now. Windows Phone is pretty far behind at over a hundred thousand, although if Joe Belfiore’s promise is anything to go by, we can expect that gap to close by the end of 2014. While the executive’s promise is one thing, it’s really up to developers to decide if the Windows Phone platform is worth developing for, and the good news is that it looks like more developers are hopping on board come 2014.

This is according to a Strategy Analytics Developer Survey where 1,600 developers were surveyed in September and were asked which platforms they were planning on supporting in 2014. Surprisingly Windows Phone saw 32% of developers saying they would develop for the platform, and what makes it even more surprising is that this number is double of the 16% who said that for 2013. Based on the chart above, it appears that Android is still the favorite platform to develop for, which is unsurprising given that Android commands the largest market share at the moment. Apple’s iOS platform appears to be behind by about 13-14%, although its gains from 2013 to 2014 are higher than Android.
