[Update: Our original story saying Call of Duty: Ghosts sales reached $1 billion was inaccurate as Activision’s press release clearly states the game reached that number in retail sales. This is something entirely different as retail sales means retailers purchased $1 billion in retail copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts, and doesn’t reflect how many sales were made to actual customers. We’ve tweaked our original story as a result.]
Well, well, well – it looks like Activision saying they’d like to get the sales records Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V achieved this year back wasn’t a fluke after all as the company announced Call of Duty: Ghosts has achieved $1 billion in worldwide retail sales just on its first day of release.
According to Activision, a total of 15,000 retail stores held midnight launch events on Monday evening to help those who need their Call of Duty: Ghosts fix as soon as possible receive their copy of the title. Call of Duty: Ghosts is said to be the most pre-ordered title at GameStop, which when you consider how many titles are pre-ordered at the U.S. video game retailer, that’s quite the impressive feat.
In addition to receiving monstrous retail sales, Call of Duty: Ghosts is also currently sitting in first place on Xbox Live, which means pretty much everyone you know or don’t know is playing the title.
Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V achieved $1 billion in sales after three days of being made available for sale. The title only generated $800 million in its first day sales, which is still an extremely impressive number, but there was no doubt the Call of Duty juggernaut would easily beat Grand Theft Auto V’s sales considering the game’s popularity. Whether or not Call of Duty: Ghosts beat out Grand Theft Auto V in actual sales to customers is still yet to be seen, but we’re sure Activision will reveal the title’s sales numbers in a couple of days.
