If you’re an Android owner who has ignored Google+ for the most part, it’s going to be difficult to continue to do so as Google plans on displaying a user’s Google+ profile photo when that person calls an Android device.
The Google+ profile photo feature will be available as an update to Android 4.4 KitKat’s new caller ID service, which will allow Google to automatically match phone numbers for both incoming and outgoing calls with their Google+ names and profile photos. The new feature is expected to enabled starting in “early 2014,” according to Google employee Attila Bodis.
At its launch, the new caller ID service will only be able to display the names and profile photos as long as the user has verified their phone number in addition to switching on Google+’s discovery feature. Users can opt out of this feature as we’re sure there are some of you who would prefer not to send your profile photo to friends, family and colleagues, especially if it’s really weird. Those who would like to opt out can head on over to Google’s Phone Numbers settings, untick the checkbox for your phone number, and you’ll be good to go. Just remember they can still put their own photo of you in their phone themselves, so you’re not completely out of the woods.
