Google Glass units have only been provided to a select few people called “Explorers,” who have been testing it out for quite some time now. Google has continued to refine the software with its monthly Glass updates, but it has now announced that updates to the hardware have also been made. Existing Glass Explorers will be able to “swap out” their existing units for new ones later this year. It hasn’t been clarified if Explorers will have to pay for these updated Glass units.

The company says that these hardware updates make Glass compatible with “future lines of shades and prescription frames,” which would look somewhat like the modified Google Glass attached to shades that we saw recently. The second edition of Google Glass also includes a mono earbud, which will replace the bone conduction speaker found in the existing version. Google has also said that Explorers will receive three invites to give out to the Google Glass program in the coming weeks. They can invite three people to join the program who can then purchase their own Glass unit online for $1,500. No word as yet on the public release of Google Glass, it is expected to be released sometime next year.
