Earlier today, we talked about a curved screen Samsung Galaxy smartphone leak [1]. Well, Samsung made its existence official [2], and here are the first images of the Round. They will give you an idea of what the product looks like and illustrates how Samsung intends to use the curved shape. The most important part of the official announcement is the specifications list. Here it is:
Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974) [3]
5.7” 1080p curved display called Super Flexible AMOLED
32GB of internal storage + microSD slot (64GB max)
3GB of RAM
Android 4.3
Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, WiFi Direct
BT 4.0 (BLE), NFC
USB 3.0
GPS+GLONASS
Samsung KNOX
151.1ⅹ79.6ⅹ7.9mm, 154g
2800mAh battery
As you can see, these are “high-end” specs, and this phone is also enterprise-ready, thanks to KNOX. Samsung plans to use the curved surface of the phone to enhance motions-activated actions that already exist by tilting the phone to quickly glance on information such as missed calls, time etc. Users can also move the phone to control music playback. Obviously, the curved shape is supposed to make the grip more comfortable — we’re looking forward to grabbing one to see how it feels in the hand. The Moto X curvy back felt very good.
From the looks of it, the Samsung Round will get more or less the same feature set as other known Samsung smartphones, such as the Galaxy S4. What do you think of the curved shape? real-added-value or not? I’m waiting to be convinced on this one, so we’ll see after the hands-on.
