Just last week, California created a law that would classify “revenge porn” as a criminal misdemeanor, and it looks like New York lawmakers also want to make a stand against this kind of thing. Unlike California though, New York is looking to include photos taken by the subject as being a part of their stand against revenge porn.
Suffolk County senator Phil Boyle recently spoke on a local radio station on the subject of creating a law that would fight revenge porn in New York. During his interview, he reminds listeners that “80 percent of these pictures are selfies. If a young woman takes a picture of herself, sends it to the boyfriend, a couple of years later he’s posting it, that would be included under our legislation and that’s a very significant improvement in the law.” The law Boyle is proposing will slap a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail for those who take part in revenge porn activities.
If New York passes a revenge porn bill, it’d be interesting to see how many other states in the U.S. jump on the bandwagon to create their own legislation fighting the dirty activity. We’re also curious to see who would be the first person to be charged with the new revenge porn ban in California and New York, that is, if they get a law passed.
