LG’s flexible OLED display will be built using plastic substrates instead of glass, which renders the display bendable and unbreakable. We’re not sure if it is truly unbreakable, but we expect that this means that dropping your phone or accidentally sitting on it shouldn’t crack the screen. The display is expected to measure just 0.44mm thin and weighs 7.2g at 6”, making it lighter and thinner than current displays found on smartphones.
According to LG’s executive VP and chief technology officer, Dr. Sang Deog Yeo, “The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices. Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year.”
