Lenovo’s Interest In BlackBerry Might Not Be As Innocent As You Think

lenovo_logoWe know that BlackBerry is looking to be bought up, whether it be by a financial institution or by another tech company, and one of the recent rumors we have heard is that Lenovo, a Chinese company, could be an interested party. Given that Lenovo’s attempts to break into the smartphone market have not exactly been high profile or stellar, acquiring a reputable company with the knowledge and resources to churn out smartphones, such as BlackBerry, would not be a stretch of the imagination, but a recent report by Forbes seems to suggest that Lenovo’s interest in BlackBerry might not be as innocent as we might think.

According to Forbes’ contributing author, Gordon G. Chang, he seems to believe that Lenovo’s interest in BlackBerry would be to destroy the company, as opposed to taking it to new heights. Chang states that the only reason Lenovo could be bidding on BlackBerry is because  “the Chinese government wants an excuse to go through BlackBerry’s books so that it can learn as much about the company as it did about Nortel,” ultimately letting them figure a way to hack BlackBerry devices.

Given that BlackBerry is well known and respected by IT admins for its security and control over BlackBerry devices, especially in the enterprise market, naturally many would be curious about how they keep their security so tight. Chang goes on to note that apparently the Pentagon believes that the BlackBerry platform is one that the Chinese government has yet to crack, hence their interest in which case Lenovo would act as a proxy. All of this sounds like some kind of spy movie and we’re not sure how accurate Chang’s claims are, but for those who buy into it, you can rest assured at Canada’s government has been pretty protectionist and typically block the sale of Canadian companies to non-Canadian entities.

What do you guys think? Does it sound a little too far-fetched?
