After what seems to be an eternity, here we are with the official announcement of the Sony Xperia Z1, their waterproof smartphone that delivers a truly groundbreaking digital camera experience on the move. Touted to deliver a “true compact camera performance” thanks to a clever combination of Sony’s award-winning “G Lens”, a large 1/2.3-type 20.7MP “Exmor RS for mobile” CMOS image sensor and “BIONZ for mobile” image processing engine, you might not need to carry around that aged compact digital camera anymore.
The Sony Xperia Z1 does seem to stand out from the competition thanks to its hardier features of being waterproof, which means dropping your device into the toilet bowl by accident should be an event that is easily shrugged off. The main focus here would be the digital camera experience, but I am quite sure that the overall smartphone user experience ain’t half bad either, thanks to a quad-core 2.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, a 3,000 mAh battery, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes among others. Expect this puppy to arrive in black, white and purple colors. It remains to be seen just how much mobile carriers will price this puppy when it finally arrives. Check out its list of key hardware specifications right after the jump. [Press Release]
