Mercedes-Benz S Class Self-Driving Car Tested
Mercedes-Benz is a name that is synonymous with luxury and safety, ferrying you in whisper quiet conditions from point A to point B while insulating you from the outside world. While having full control over the wheel makes one feel a whole lot more secure, there is this self-driving car idea that might actually be crazy enough to implement worldwide so that motor vehicle accidents can be removed from our vocabulary entirely. Word has it that the Mercedes-Benz S500 Intelligent Drive that you see above was recently tested, where it was driven autonomously – meaning, there is no human driver directly behind the wheel, gallivanting through country roads and inner-city traffic in Germany.
The total amount of mileage covered by this luxurious set of wheels? A rather respectable 62 miles, which we are more than happy to report that the entire shebang went on without any incident. The test was held at the end of last month, where it used a full-size 2014 S500 that sported just a handful of modifications beyond what can be found on the production car. Dieter Zetsche, chief executive of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz, said, “For us, autonomous vehicles are an important step on the way to accident-free driving. They will bring greater comfort and safety for all road users.”
