Samsung has confirmed that it will be announcing it’s new smartwatch on September 4th. There have been a lot of rumors about this device, though not much is known about its design. Today, the first purported images of Galaxy Gear smartwatch have leaked online. The unit seen in these pictures is said to be one of the prototypes that Samsung sent to select partners and developers, it is said that while Samsung goes to great lengths to mask the actual design, it actually isn’t that far off from the one that will be publicly unveiled on September 4th.
The images have been grabbed from a promotional marketing video that was created by an independent team working with Samsung. Galaxy Gear is said to quite large at 3 inches diagonally. The screen is square with large bezels on the top and bottom. It apparently has a rectangular and chunky shape with rounded corners. Speakers and a 4 megapixel camera are reportedly built into the strap. While the wristband is described as “clunky and masculine,” the watch reportedly isn’t that heavy to hold. Wi-Fi is said to be present as well, the watch is deemed capable of pulling emails even when its not hooked up to a smartphone. Expected features include Samsung S Voice for voice commands, preloaded Android apps for health tracking and social media, easy integration with a companion Galaxy S product, call logs and 10 hours of battery life.
Galaxy Gear is apparently fitness focused, allowing users to keep an eye on health data. They’ll also be able to count steps and measure heart data. Users will reportedly also be able to take pictures of their food using the camera and tag it based on what kind of food it is. In these pictures the Galaxy Gear shows a dull grey color, since this is said to be a masked prototype version, it is highly likely that the public wouldn’t be offered the new smartwatch in such a bland color. More differences might be present between this prototype and the final version, if there are, we’ll surely get to know about them on September 4th. [Images via VentureBeat]
