After months and months of endless rumors, Apple finally unveiled the iPhone 5C today. Its a first for the company, to announce two new iPhones in one year. Its also a first for Apple to offer a cheaper option alongside its flagship offering, which is the iPhone 5S. We heard a lot of rumors about the iPhone 5C, about its specifications, design and color options. All of the details have now been disclosed, so now its time to see what Apple has packaged into its first ever budget iPhone.
The iPhone 5C will be available in five different colors, green, white, blue, pink and yellow to be precise. Purported casings of the iPhone 5C were already spotted weeks before the event in these five colors. Apple says that the entire back and sides of the iPhone 5C are made from a single part and that users won’t notice any seams, joints or part lines. Apple says these five colors were selected because they have “uncommon beauty and depth.” They wanted color to truly be a part of the experience, not something that was just painted on. The company says that this infusion of colors wouldn’t have been possible with metal, but they didn’t want to imitate “the typical, fragile plastic phone.” Therefore, the iPhone 5C has been built around a steel-reinforced frame which doubles up as an antenna. To achieve a precise fit with the hard-coated polycarbonate outer shell, the frame is attached to the shell in individual pieces and then laser-welded. Its “unlike any plastic phone you’ve ever held,” says Apple, obviously.

Specifications are somewhat similar to the iPhone 5. It touts an Apple designed A6 processor, the same 4 inch Retina Display and the same 8 megapixel iSight rear camera. Battery is slightly bigger than iPhone 5 and there’s a new FaceTime HD camera up front. iPhone 5C also supports more LTE bands than any other smartphone, according to Apple. It has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 as well.
Contrary to popular belief that iPhone 5C will only be offered without a contract, the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 5C costs $99 and $199 respectively with a two year contract. Pre-orders open up on September 13th. The iPhone 5C will be released in U.S., Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the UK on September 20th. They’ve also created custom cases for this smartphone using soft-feel silicone rubber. The case has cut out circular patterns through which the original color can be seen. The new cases cost $29.
