One of the major features the Xbox One will launch with is the ability to capture the last five minutes of gameplay, allowing its users to upload those videos later if they deem the content worthy enough to show off. Up until today, it’s been unknown at what quality the videos will be captured at, but Xbox One’s chief product office Marc Whitten revealed the console will capture game footage at 720p and at 30 frames per second.
Even though games will likely output at 1080p and run at 60 frames per second, such as one of Xbox One’s launch title Forza 5, the console’s built-in DVR capabilities is only able to capture at 720p and 30 frames per second. Whitten describes the experience of not only capturing moments from a game, but also the process and some of the concepts Microsoft plans when it comes to sharing them.
“The first thing you’ll see with our game DVR is the integration of our Upload service on the console. This service allows you to manage, edit, and share your content. Your clips are stored in the cloud. Also, you’ll see games making “magic moment” videos of your gameplay based on the game DVR functionality – all seamlessly integrated. You’ll be able to see these clips in the Xbox One Guide, in your own game DVR collection, and when you are looking at gamercards on the system. You’ll also see games take advantage of this platform capability and do interesting things to integrate captured game footage into the game experience itself.”
Whitten doesn’t go into specifics as to who Microsoft plans on partnering with in order to allow saved videos to be uploaded, but we’re sure Twitch will be one of those services, and we’re hopeful the company makes it possible for clips to be uploaded onto YouTube as well.
