It was just yesterday when we reported on a rumor concerning the possible release of Windows 8.1. The rumor pegged the update to be released in mid-October, and today we received official word from Microsoft the long-awaited update will be making its way to a PC near you on October 17.

Microsoft also announced an exact time of when its Windows 8.1 update will be made available, which should roll out starting at 7 a.m. ET / 4 a.m. PT. The update will then be available on the Windows Store, and will be made available at retail and on new devices starting on October 18.

Microsoft had detailed many of the improvements they will roll out in Windows 8.1 earlier this summer, even allowing you risk takers out there to try out a preview build of the update shortly after their announcement.

Windows 8.1 will bring a number of welcomed changes to Windows 8 as it’ll mark the return of the Start button, will offer some interesting changes to the on-screen keyboard as well as to its Microsoft Outlook application. Multitasking will also receive an improvement as it’ll be possible to have up to three different applications available at a time and will no longer be locked into using 1/3 of your screen space.
